IDENTIFYING & SUPPORTING CHILDREN AT RISK OF NEGLECT

Target Audience

This child protection learning opportunity is for practitioners from the specific or intensive workforce who have regular, direct involvement with children, young people and their families.  Particularly useful for social workers, teachers, police, health workforce and family support services based in Edinburgh in need of an in-depth knowledge of neglect.

This event supports practitioners to reflect on current practice and consider new ideas. We’ll discuss how to assess and evidence neglect for children of different ages and stages, cover the drivers and types of neglect before focusing on the impact neglect has on children’s longer term wellbeing. There will be allotted time to introduce and practice applying the Risk of Neglect toolkit, which all practitioners are encouraged to make use of in their work supporting families at risk of neglect.   

Content

This course will focus on the complexities of working with the issues of neglect and in particular:

  • Current challenges experienced by staff
  • Opportunity to discuss Learning Reviews focused on Neglect and recommendations
  • Discuss ways children can experience neglect by age
  • Understanding and recording the impact of neglect
  • Consideration of the challenges of working with neglect and how these may be overcome
  • Opportunity to consider how to evidence and present concerns regarding neglect
  • Introduction to using ‘risk of neglect toolkit’ and practice opportunity
  • Time to reflect on current practice and consider new ideas.
